About This Transmission

The Ford 10R80 is the 10 speed longitudinal automatic transmission that powers the modern F-150, Mustang GT and GT500, Bronco, Raptor, Ranger, Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator. Co-developed by Ford and General Motors starting in 2013 and introduced to the market in 2017 in the F-150 and Mustang GT, the 10R80 replaced the 6R80 6 speed and immediately became the highest gear count automatic ever offered in a Ford pickup or pony car.

The 10 forward gears, wide 7.4 to 1 ratio span, integrated lockup torque converter, and direct acting solenoids deliver smoother acceleration, faster part throttle response, and meaningfully better highway fuel economy than the 6R80 it replaced. The unit is rated for up to 700 lb-ft of stock torque and aftermarket built versions support up to 1,000 horsepower without changing clutch capacity.

Signs You Need a Replacement Transmission

• Torque converter shudder, common on early 2017 to 2019 units (well documented in TSB 19-2155, TSB 20-2331)
• Harsh 1-2 or 2-3 shifts that cannot be calmed by a re flash

Known Problems With This Transmission

• Torque converter shudder (2017 to 2019): The most common 10R80 complaint. Caused by internal lockup clutch material that breaks down with age and contaminates the fluid. Ford issued multiple TSBs (most recently TSB 20-2331). Fix is typically a torque converter replacement plus complete fluid flush. We inspect torque converter condition and disclose status on every unit.
• Harsh shift complaints: Early 2017 to 2018 units shipped with calibration that produced harsh 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. Ford released calibration updates. A used unit may need a re flash to current calibration when installed.
• Valve body wear: At very high mileage (150,000 plus) the valve body solenoid pack can develop irregular pressure modulation, causing flare on shifts. We pressure test every unit.
• Pump cavitation on neglected fluid units: 10R80s with overdue fluid service can develop pump cavitation noise. We document fluid condition before shipping.

Pricing is roughly one third to one fifth of a built or rebuilt unit. Our 10R80s are pressure tested, shift tested, and the torque converter condition is documented.

A professionally rebuilt 10R80 with updated calibration, upgraded clutch packs, and a new torque converter typically runs $4,500 to $7,500. This is the right path for a high mileage F-150 or for a tow vehicle.

An aftermarket built 10R80 (Project Carbon, PowerTech, Suncoast) is rated for 1,000 horsepower plus and runs $6,500 to $14,000. This is for boosted Coyote, GT500, or Raptor R builds where the stock unit is at the edge of its capacity.

• Year matching matters: A 2017 unit installed in a 2022 vehicle will need a TCM re flash. Plan for this with your shop.
• Torque converter is the single most common 10R80 failure point. Even on a healthy unit, plan for a complete fluid flush at install. On 2017 to 2019 units, plan for a torque converter replacement as preventive maintenance for towing or hard use.
• RWD vs 4WD: Confirm before ordering. Tail housing and adapter differ.
• Mercon ULV only: Do not substitute. Wrong fluid causes immediate shudder and clutch failure.
• TCM stays with the vehicle: A used 10R80 does not include a TCM. The vehicle TCM controls the new transmission. A re flash is typically required for calibration matching.
